Convergent Communication:

When taking a systemic approach
  • the effectiveness and
  • efficiency
  • of applying the systems principles to an organizational issue is dependent on the quality of communication.

    The convergent model of communication is a diagnostic tool for identifying where miscommunication may be occurring when mutual understanding is required.

    Within a systemic approach we are concerned about three aspects of the model

  • perception (whether those in communication have a similar capacity to record the information being transmitted);
  • interpretation (the almost instantaneous categorisation that is put onto received information); and
  • understanding (the sense made about the information including appropriation of values that converts information to knowledge).
  •

    Systemic Thinking requires participants to suspend judgement (the application of their own unique set of values) as long as possible while the diversity of perspectives are explored and nurtured. Such a delay increases the likelihood that understandings gained will be more inclusive and therefore more likely to be mutually held.
